Autumn Cleanse

Based on Ayurvedic medicine and the Cycles of the Earth

Practicing cleansing on a regular basis is a wonderful way to eliminate toxins, lose extra weight (or even gain weight, as needed), increase physical stamina, mental clarity and general well-being, as well as create the perfect basis for personal and spiritual growth.

A cleanse differs from a fast in that you continue to nourish your body with food, but the quality and quantity of foods ingested changes. Certain foods are avoided altogether (red meat, sugar, coffee and caffeine products, processed foods…) as are drugs such as alcohol and tobacco. Others are used in greater quantities, such as Mung bean, ghee and green vegetables, to balance pH, detoxify and bring large quantities of beneficial phyto-nutrients, such as plant-based magnesium and calcium, antioxidants, beneficial gut flora, etc.

One of the basic tenets behind an Ayurveda-based cleanse is to adapt the practice to your specific body needs, respecting your particular physical, mental and emotional make-up. This is where it becomes an exercise in self-awareness, giving you the opportunity to learn about your body and its needs. The mind serves us to learn about this process, but then takes a back seat in order to allow the body and emotions to interact freely and process any stuck energy in the energy field.

During cleansing is an excellent time to practice techniques such as yoga, Qi Gong, massage and energy work. Using crystals to break up stuck energies and facilitate the process of detoxification is highly recommended. Contact with Nature, walking barefoot on the Earth, interacting with plants, animals, insects and minerals is essential to nourishing the non-physical parts of us, which become much more evident while we cleanse.

We have chosen a period starting in September, while the Sun moves through the constellation of Virgo, to begin this cleanse. Virgo is all about health, purification, and the elimination of what no longer serves us. It also has to do with analysis (which means to break down into parts and separate the grain from the chaff, so to speak), and using the mind to learn new techniques. As the mind or intellect has been given a disproportionate place in the way we interact with our environment, including our own bodies and emotions, we will learn to allow it to take the back seat and to trust our bodies to work with the cleanse, and use our emotions as a gauge for action, taking it deeper when we can or pulling back when we feel the need to do so.

The cleanse will end while the Sun is in Libra, which is the sign of balance, harmony and beauty. The Autumn Equinox, happening on September 23rd, is the time when the Sun and the Earth come back into balance, and nights and days are equal. While the beginning of this cleanse has the potential to be somewhat challenging, with the elimination of foods and substances we are accustomed to ingesting, the results of following the cleanse to the best of our ability will be the harmonious interplay between body, mind, emotions and spirit. This will leave us feeling balanced, healthier and more beautiful than before, as we accept and honor our bodies by gifting ourselves with the cleanse.

The quality of the foods we use during the cleanse is very important, as our bodies need to eliminate toxins that are stored deep in our tissues. Adding additional toxins by using processed, non-organic foods or GMO’s only serves to slow down the elimination process, making it more difficult for our body to handle this important practice. It is also crucial to respect your body’s rhythm – do not force anything, or push yourself too far. It is better to be slow and steady rather than overdo it and put a strain on your body.

Here is the breakdown of the four-week period slated for this cleanse:

9/8 – 9-15 ~ Pre-cleanse: this is the adjustment period to prepare for the deeper cleanse.

9/16 – 9/22 ~ Cleanse: start of the actual cleanse. Should only be done after pre-cleanse.

9/23 – 9/29 ~ Deeper cleanse. This can be the continuation of week 2, or time to implement a juice fast or other mono-diet.

9/30 – 10/6 ~ Rebuilding period. Slowly re-introducing certain foods to move back into pre-cleanse mode, and then to eating the foods that agree with you the most.

We will meet five times: September 8th, 15th, 22nd, 29th and October 6th, 7:00 to 9:00 pm. The cost of this cleanse is $150, not including supplies, which you will buy individually.
