Valentine’s astrology

With Mardi Gras season in full force and Spring already sprung here in New Orleans, we may feel the need to be completely free and express our uniqueness without the usual social constraints that tend to dictate our behavior for the rest of the year. These two tendencies, on the one hand expansion and freedom of expression, on the other hand restraint and self-containment, are the energies of Jupiter and Saturn, respectively. In astrology these two planets are known as the “social planets,” and they are associated with the signs Sagittarius (ruled by Jupiter), Capricorn (ruled by Saturn), Aquarius (ruled by Saturn) and Pisces (ruled by Jupiter). These four signs are located in the “social” sector of the zodiac, and are respectives the 9th, 10th, 11th and 12th signs.

Jupiter is presently traversing Libra, the sign of balance and harmony, and of relationships. Its big, expansive energy is creating the conditions for establishing new relationships, or for deepening or moving beyond existing ones. It also wants to show us how to balance our energies between our relationships to others, and that to our Self – particularly now, as it is opposing Uranus in Aries, the planet of individuality, in the sign of selfhood.

Saturn, on the other hand, is moving through Sagittarius, where its tendency to restrict and restrain is being opened by the expansive Jupiterian sign, allowing for a structured and practical look into the higher teachings of Sagittarius wisdom. This movement is supporting the Uranian impulse for freedom, tempering it with understanding of the big picture, and helping us to balance our need for individual freedom with the social imperative of finding collective solutions to the problems plaguing humanity at this time.

As of today, Valentine’s Day 2017, we are almost half-way through the first eclipse phase of the year, meaning that we are allowing the imbalances exposed by the full moon eclipse in Leo to re-calibrate while we await the new moon/solar eclipse in Pisces. This is where we drop the ego’s need to be right and step into a universal attitude of love for all beings. May all beings be happy, and may all of us find love in our lives. All my relations.
